I was amazed when I found this book on Goodreads. It's a slim volumne but very nicely done.
Some of my favorite artists where highlighted. Many are my favorite because I love their work and they worked and lived in St. Augustine thanks in part to Henry Flagler.
Flagler built an artists studio in the rear of his opulent Ponce de Leon Hotel. There were seven separate artist studios. The senior artist in residence was Martin Johnson Heade although he was already familiar and lived in St. Augustine prior to Flagler's hotel being built.
The separate building is still in existence and lovely, just like the hotel which Louis Comfort Tiffany decorated.
Pictures scattered throughout the book are beautiful. I was surprised at the number of women who were highlighted and apparently accepted as talented artists during the gilded age in St. Augustine.
